Panthers Prevail 4-2 over Michigan State

Spartans entered contest ranked #2 in latest North Regional rankings

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Jordan Steger, in his first game back from injury, scored two goals which would be the difference as the Panthers prevailed 4-2 over Michigan State Friday night at Patterson Ice Center. With the win, DU lifts its record to 23-9 on the season.

The Panthers would capitalize on a Spartan penalty when Justin Welker (Speedway, Ind.) poked in a loose puck in front of the net at 15:13 in the first period. Bryon Guerin (Jackson, Mich.) and Norm Farr (Jenison, Mich.) tallied the assists on the goal.

Michigan State would tie the score at 1-1 on a shorthanded goal less than a minute into the second period but the Panthers would regain the lead at 5:02 mark when a Zack Feher (Livonia, Mich.) feed set up a goal by Norm Farr. DU would add to the lead when Jordan Steger (Caledonia, Mich.) knocked in a rebound shot with only 1:37 remaining in the period.

Steger would score his second goal of the game less than 1 minute into the final period with Welker and Keyworth tallying the helpers. The Spartans would score late, but it would not be enough as the Panthers prevailed.

The Panthers would finish the game with a huge advantage in shots at 49-24. In the third period alone, DU outshot the Spartans 23-7.

John Cruse (Shelby Twp, Mich.) picked up the win in goal as he stopped 22 of MSU's shots. With the win Cruse is 14-4 on the season.

Davenport will go for the two-game weekend sweep of the Spartans tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m at Patterson Ice Center.
