D3 Hockey Finishes a Weekend of Consistent Play

Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport D3 hockey team took on Lansing Community College at Patterson Ice Center Sunday night.  This was the second contest between the two squads in as many nights, as the Panthers skated to an 8-1 decision in Lansing on Saturday night.

The Panthers came out strong in the first period in their match-up with Lansing Community College Sunday night at Patterson Ice Center.  The Panthers scored quickly on the power play with a goal from Ben Duthler assisted by Leo Donovan.  Also scoring in the period was Sam Waldhart while the assists went to Chad Ouellette and Ben Duthler.  The last tally of the period came from the stick of Garrett Garber when he picked off a pass in the neutral zone and took it in for the score on the break away.

The defenses settled in a bit during the second period with both teams only allowing a goal each.  LCC got a goal from Blanchett a minute in to the period to trim the Panther lead back to three after the Garrett Russell goal assisted by Chad Ouellette and Ben Duthler.

The third period saw Davenport extend its lead on a quick one-time shot from Mike Soto thanks to the faceoff win and assist by Bryon Guerin.  This would be the only goal of the period from either team as Davenport would win the game 5-1.  The game winner went to Sam Waldhart and his goal in the first period.

DU finished the weekend 3-0 and now turns their focus back to league play as they match up with Calvin College this weekend.

Post-Game QuotesChris Green

On what impressed him this weekend – “I was happy with the 3-0 weekend as the guys skated hard and got off to quick starts.”  “Both games with LCC started quickly with a three goal first period and quick starts are important for this team.”  “I thought the guys played well in 8 of 9 periods this weekend, anytime the guys can come out and be consistent like that, we have a good chance of winning.”

On what didn't impress him this weekend – “I was a bit concerned with the lull in play during the second period tonight, but the guys picked up the pace and finished strong during the third period.
