D3 Hockey Earns Weekend Split with Rival Oakland

Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The best thing for any team after an outing to forget; get back on the ice the next afternoon.  The Davenport D3 Hockey squad did just that Saturday afternoon against rival Oakland at Patterson Ice Center.

This afternoon's game got off to a defensive start with the first period dominated by both goalies.  Oakland goalie Stephen Henzie stopped all 10 shots he faced in the first stanza while Panther goalie John Cruse denied all 9 that came his way.  Both teams did well to kill penalties and hold in defensive spots.

The second period brought out the scoring, mostly due to a number of 5-on-3 situations for both teams.  DU was kept shorthanded through most of the second period allowing Oakland the opportunity to score three goals.  DU started the scoring with a goal 51 seconds into the second period off the stick of Zach Bodziak.  However Oakland would score three straight goals, two on the power play, to take the 3-1 edge to end the period.

Trailing 3-1 heading into the third period, the Panthers struck with a flurry of 4 goals to earn the victory.  Goals from Zack Feher, Zach Bodziak and Ben Duthler the Panthers took a 4-3 lead midway through the 3rd period.  However it would be the goal from John Brooks assisted by Garrett Russell that would be the eventual game winner.  Davenport fought back to take the game 5-4 earning a weekend split with their rivals from Oakland.

Post-Game QuotesChris Green

Thoughts on winning despite slow start – “We preach to the guys everyday about not quitting, always going hard regardless of the situation.”  “This is a good team that can win games like this because they have a never quit attitude.”

Post-Game Notes
Davenport is now 14-2 on the season… The Panthers will be on the ice again for the Clash of the Corn Tournament November 16th thru the 19th…. With this afternoon's win the Panthers have yet to lose back to back games this season.
