Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport D3 hockey looked to earn a sweep of Saginaw Valley during the weekend two game series between the two squads. The second of which took place at Patterson Ice Center on Saturday evening after a Friday night 5-3 Panther victory in Saginaw.
The first period proved to be a solid period for the Panthers who came out skating strong and pushing the play to the SVSU zone. Davenport took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by
Bryon Guerin just over five minutes into the period. Guerin was assisted by
Mike Soto. The rest of the period belonged to the goalies as no more pucks were put behind either net-minder.
The second period belonged to the goal keepers, right up until the last 30 seconds of the second period. That is when Saginaw Valley tallied their first score of the night via a power play goal from Mike McFarland. Both goalies had owned the period fending off multiple barrages from the opposing offense. The period also saw multiple penalties credited to both sides.
The third period was more domination by both net-minders as Davenport goalie
John Cruse and SVSU goalie Joe Kirkland did everything each could do to keep the score tied. SVSU however took advantage of a 5-on-3 situation to score just under five minutes into the third period. That goal by Dylan Welch would prove to be the game winner.
