Gentile's Grand Slam not enough in 8-7 Loss to Warner

Panthers trailed 5-0 in 7th, took 6-5 lead but fell with three late runs from Lions

Box Score

LAKE WALES, Fla. – Derrick Gentile connected on a grand slam in a 6-run seventh inning for Davenport but it was not enough to lift the Panthers to a comeback win as they fell 8-7 to host Warner University.  Davenport will take on Brandeis University on Tuesday at 10:30 at Chain O' Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Fla.

Davenport got a solid first three innings out of starter Tucker Gernhard (Stafford, Va.) but the Warner offense got to him in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Royals finally got some runs on the board when on a deep 2-run homerun to left center to drive in give the host a 2-0 lead after four innings.

The Royals would add another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to put the Panthers in a 5-0 hole.

The seventh inning saw the Panther bats come alive and after a Derrick Gentile (Sturgis, Mich.) grandslam, Davenport had completed the comeback with a 6-5 lead after the inning was complete.

The Royals would not give up, and in the bottom of the eighth they got some timely hitting from their designated hitter who tied the game with a RBI single. WU brought home two more to make it 8-6 after eight innings of play and all DU could muster in the ninth was an RBI sac fly from Matt McNeil (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) to make the final score 8-7.

Cory Hammond (London, Ontario) suffered his first defeat in a Davenport uniform as DU will take on Brandeis University on Tuesday in the big stadium at Chain O' Lakes Park.  The game will be broadcast live on the DAN and there will also be live stats provided.
