Davenport Defeats Saint Xavier and William Penn to End Florida Trip

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Davenport finished up their Florida trip today with a 3-2 eight-inning victory over Saint Xavier and a 8-1 victory over William Penn. The Panthers are now 8-5 on the season and will leave the sunshine state with a record of 7-3.

In game one against Saint Xavier, senior pitcher Tucker Gernhard (Stafford, Va.) would pitch four scoreless innings after retiring the opposition in order the first three. DU would see themselves fall behind 2-0 in the top of the fifth with Gernhard giving up a two-run homerun. 

The Panthers would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning with a homerun of their own off the bat of Mike Allen (Midland, Mich.)Chris VanGessel (Grandville, Mich.) would also come up big in the sixth inning with an RBI single to tie the game up at 2-2.

With both teams unable to score in the seventh, Rob Bolster (Blissfield, Mich.) would get the game winning hit with two outs in the bottom of the eight to give DU the 3-2 victory.

Colton Loomis (Alma, Mich.) would appear in relief in the seventh and eighth innings for the Panthers, giving him his second win on the year. 

Late inning scoring would also be the difference in DU's second game of the day against William Penn University. 

The Panthers would push one run across in the fifth inning before exploding for seven runs in the sixth. Up 8-0 heading into the seventh inning, William Penn would only be able to push across one run to give DU the 8-1 victory.

Andy Westerburg (Spring Lake, Mich.) would get the start on the mound, pitching four innings of no hit baseball. Colton Loomis (Alma, Mich.) would appear again out of the bullpen for the fourth and fifth innings to earn his second win of the day and improve to 3-1 on the year.

Jarrett Luyk (Hudsonville, Mich.) would appear with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, and finish the seventh to earn his fourth save of the year.

Davenport is now 8-5 on the year and will return to action on March 11th and 12th when they travel to Owensboro, Kentucky. The Panthers will face off against Brescia University in a four game series with live stats available in each of those games.
