Panthers Win Game But Not Pool at Nationals

Box Score HOLLAND, Mich. – The Panthers overpowered McKendree University, defeating the Bearcats 5-1 in ACHA Division 3 National Tournament pool play.Unfortunately, Davenport needed some help from the other teams in their pool to advance and that did not happen as DU ends their season 31-14 overall.

The victory lifts Davenport's tournament record to 2-1 and ties the Panthers with Cal U and Florida Gulf Coast for first play in pool play. However, the Panthers will not play in the semifinals tomorrow as Cal U wins the three way tiebreaker. The tiebreaker is the lowest number of goals allowed for pool play. Davenport allowed 11 goals, Florida Gulf Coast allowed 10 and Cal U allowed the least at nine.

The Panthers started the scoring in the first period at 15:16 when defenseman Jason Kraemer (Livonia, Mich.) cleaned up in front of the Bearcats' net. Ben Duthler (Grand Rapids, Mich.) picked up the assist on the power play goal.

Davenport added their second goal early in the second period on Sam Waldhart (Walker, Mich.) first goal of the game at 0:40. The Panthers piled onto their lead as a Waldhart snipe beat the Bearcats' netminder for a 3-0 margin. McKendree tried to get back into the game, closing the score to 3-1 at 16:56 of the second period. 

The third period saw the Panthers continue to put the puck in the back of the net. Jordan Steger (Caledonia, Mich.) knocked in a rebound at 0:34 to give Davenport their fourth goal of the game. The helpers went to Zack Feher and Taylor Keyworth (Grand Rapids, Mich.) on the goal. Captain Chad Ouellette (Windsor, Ontario) finished the Panther scoring, going backhand to beat the Bearcats' goalie on a breakout.

Waldhart totaled three points in the contest (two goals, one assist), and Oullette added two more on one goal and an assist.

John Cruse (Shelby Twp, Mich.) stopped 15 of 16 shots faced, as the Panthers outshot McKendree 35-16.
