OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Panthers completed a four game sweep of Brescia University today with a 8-2 and 5-2 victory after defeating the host team yesterday 9-5 and 12-1 (5). DU is now 12-5 on the year and will continue play tomorrow in Winona, Ind. against Grace College.
Game 1: DU – 12, BU – 1 (5 Innings)
Davenport used an eleven run inning in the top of the fifth to complete the 12-1 run rule victory. Senior
Tucker Gernhard (Stafford, Va.) pitched a two hit gem, striking out seven in five complete innings of work.
Mike Allen (Midland, Mich.) and Matt McNeil (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) would each have two hits in the game with McNeil knocking in two runs as well.
Game 2: DU – 9, BU – 5
The Panthers would take a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first off an RBI double from
Derrick Gentile (Sturgis, Mich.). Brescia would answer back in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own to go up 2-1. That would be the only lead for the host team as DU would add three more runs in the second, one in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and then one more in the sixth.
Andy Westerburg (Spring Lake, Mich.) would get the start on the mound for the Panthers giving up five runs on seven hits in four and two thirds innings of work. The 9-5 victory would be Westerburg's second of the year with Gentile and Mike Allen each having two hits in the game.
Game 3: DU -8, BU – 2
Davenport's bats would continue to stay hot in game three of the series with them exploding for fourteen hits in the game, six of which where extra base hits.
DU would push four runs across in the first inning, three of those coming off a homerun by Joe Freist (Shepherd, Mich.). Brescia would answer with two runs in the bottom of the inning but that would be all the offense for them off starting pitcher Cody VanKoevering (Jenison, Mich.).
An additional two runs in the second along with runs in both the third and sixth would give DU the 8-2 victory. VanKoevering would record the victory on the mound with Brandon Bongard (Grand Rapids, Mich.) going 3-4 with a homerun in the game.
Game 4: DU – 5, BU - 2
The Panthers would capitalize on Brescia's mistakes in the final game of the series to record a 5-2 victory. With Brescia taking a 2-0 lead after the first, DU would quickly answer back in the third with three runs off two hits and one error.
Both teams would be held scoreless in the fourth with the Panthers adding insurance runs in the fifth and seventh.
Drew Kennedy (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) would get his second victory on the mound pitching six complete innings, giving up just four hits on the day. Derrick Gentile (Sturgis, Mich.) would go 3-4 in the game with two doubles and two runs scored along with Matt McNeil (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) and Brian Spykerman (Anaheim, Calif.) each having two hits as well.
The four game sweep puts DU at 12-5 on the year with them completing their weekend tomorrow at Grace College for a 2:00pm game. Live stats will be available for tomorrows game at www.dupanthers.com.
