JACKSON, Tenn. – On the second day of the Union University tournament the Panthers walked away with a 5-3 victory over #24 Union University, before dropping their second game 7-2 to Central Baptist College. The split puts Davenport at 6-11 on the year with them returning to the field next weekend for the Campbellsville/Lindsey Wilson Tournament in Kentucky.
In game one against Union the first and fifth innings proved to be the difference makers in the 5-3 victory for DU. The Panthers would use the long ball in the top of the first with a two-run homerun by Heather Brusokas to score Kelsey Egyhazi from first and then a solo shot from Katie Cornman to give DU the 3-0 lead.
With the score still 3-0 heading into the fifth the Lady Panthers would capitalize on defensive mistakes by Union to push two more runs across the plate and increase their lead to 5-0. Union would put together a late run in the bottom of the seventh but the Panthers would be able to hold on and win 5-3.
Sam Cole pitched seven complete innings for DU earning her fourth win this year on the mound. Amber Getty, Kelsey Egyhazi, and Debra Burton would each have hits in the game along with Cornman's and Brusokas's homeruns.
In game two Davenport would take on Central Baptist College for the second time in two days in their final game of the Union University Tournament. Both teams would account for eleven hits in the game, but DU would strand thirteen runners on base which would attribute to the 7-2 loss.
To start the game Central Baptist would take an early 7-0 lead after just two innings of play. The Panthers would then put two runs up on the board in the bottom of the third off a Brianna Carpenter homerun to cut the Mustang lead to just five.
After the Carpenter homerun the Panthers would leave three runners on base to end the inning along with two more in the fourth, one in the fifth, and then two in the sixth. The 7-2 loss would be the Panthers eleventh of the year with Carpenter going 3-3 from the plate along with Getty, Cornman, and Chelsey Dow each having two hits as well.
