KENTWOOD, Mich. - Davenport completed the weekend 4-game sweep today with a pair of victories over visiting Concordia 7-0 and 5-1. The two wins lift Davenport's season record to 16-6 and they start league action a perfect 4-0. DU will host MCC-foe Spring Arbor on Tuesday.
The first game saw another dominating pitching performance from Davenport as junior
Matt Loomis (Alma, Mich.) allowed only three hits in five innings of work while striking out six and walking only two.
The DU offense got off to an interesting start as they collected their first four runs while recording only a single hit. The starter for Concordia walked four of the first five batters in the first inning leading to a pair of runs for the Panthers.
DU came back with one more in the second when
Chris VanGessel (Grandville, Mich.) drew a two-out walk and later scored after a stolen base, wild pitch and error in the field to put Davenport on top 3-0.
The Panthers finally got in the hit column in the top of the fourth as
Derrick Gentile (Sturgis, Mich.) picked up one of only two RBI in the game for DU. Scoring on the play was VanGessel again as the junior scored three in the game. The final three runs were scored in the fifth and six innings.
Game two, which served as a 9-inning game with DU being the home team, saw very limited scoring with only a few hits for the first set of innings. After struggling in the opening two innings, Davenport broke through in the third when
Drew Kennedy (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) started the inning with a single.
After
Travis Laver (Holland, Mich.) pinch-ran and stole second and was moved to third on a
Rob Bolster (Blissfield, Mich.) ground-out,
Chris VanGessel brought him home for a 1-0 Davenport lead. DU added two more runs in the next two frames to lead 3-1 after five innings.
The run by the Cardinals would be there only one of the day allowed by Kennedy who finished the game with three strikeouts, four hits allowed and just one walk. The win improved his season record to 3-0 on the year.
The final run of the game, which happened in the eighth inning, came on a solo blast off the bat of reigning WHAC Player of the Week
Matt McNeil (St. Clair Shores, Mich.).
The pair of wins lifts Davenport to 16-6 on the year and 4-0 in league play. The Panthers host Spring Arbor in a non-conference tilt on Tuesday before heading to Livonia next weekend for a four-game series with defending WHAC Champion Madonna University.
