Panthers Grab Two Wins Against the University of Rio Grande

RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The Lady Panthers combined for 25 hits on the day and 19 runs scored to earn two victories over host Rio Grande. DU would take game one 8-2 and finish the doubleheader with an 11-8 victory. Davenport is now 11-12 on the year and will be back in action on Sunday against Shawnee State University.

In game one Rio Grande would take their only lead of the day with an unearned run in the bottom of second. After leaving the bases loaded in the first two innings DU would finally push four runs across the plate with two RBI's from Amber Getty (Wayland, Mich.), one for Debra Burton (Cassopolis, Mich.) and one for Ali Dawson (Galesburg, Mich.). Up 4-1, DU would add another run in the fourth off a Burton single to increase their lead to 5-1.

In the seventh Davenport would add three more runs to complete the 8-2 victory over the Red Storm. Eight different Panthers would record hits in the game with Katie Cornman (Eastpointe, Mich.) going 3-3 with an RBI and two walks and Burton finishing 2-4 with 2 RBI's.

Sam Cole (Belleville, Mich.) would record the win on the mound, pitching seven complete innings with four strikeouts.

DU would jump out to a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game two with Rio Grande adding a run in the bottom of the inning. Up 4-1, the Panthers would have another four run inning in the third with the Red Storm adding a run as well to cut the lead to 8-2.

Both teams would add runs in the fifth with DU adding another in the top of the sixth to bring the score to 10-3. In the bottom of the sixth Rio Grande would put together a small rally, scoring five runs off six hits.

With back to back doubles from Getty and Burton in the top of the seventh DU would add an insurance run which would be enough for the 11-8 victory. Davenport would record 14 hits overall with Heather Brusokas (Glendale, Calif.) going 3-4, Getty 2-3 with two doubles and two RBI's, Brianna Carpenter (Irvine, Calif.) 2-4, and Burton finishing 2-4 with an RBI.

Karlee Despres (Belmont, Mich.) would pick up her first win of the year, pitching five innings with five strikeouts. Cole would come into the game in the seventh for relief to pick up her first save of the year.

With the two victories Davenport is now 11-12 on the year and will be back in action on Sunday against Shawnee State University. Game time is set for 1:00pm with live stats available at www.dupanthers.com.
