Bats Continue to Stay Hot in Doubleheader Sweep of Shawnee State

Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score | Video Highlights

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – After having to remove two inches of snow off the field this morning, Davenport was able to record two wins, 9-0 and 9-2, over host Shawnee State University. The wins completed a perfect 4-0 weekend for the Panthers who are now 13-12 on the year.

Amber Getty (Wayland, Mich.) would lead off the game with a single to right field and would later score off a double from Heather Brusokas (Glendale, Calif.). Up 1-0 Davenport would put together a three run second with RBI's from Morgan Greenfield (Wyoming, Mich.), Kelsey Egyhazi (Mishawaka, Ind.), and Getty.

The Panthers would add another run in the third and then they would be held scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings. An RBI double by Brianna Carpenter (Irvine, Calif.) in the sixth would give DU a 6-0 lead heading into DU's final at bat of the game.

Three more insurance runs would be recorded for the Panthers in the top of the seventh with Brusokas accounting for 2 RBI's and Ali Dawson (Galesburg, Mich.) one.  The 9-0 lead would be more than enough for sophomore pitcher Sam Cole (Belleville, Mich.) as she would record a complete game shut-out giving up just three hits to earn her eighth win on the mound.

Offensively, Davenport would have nine hits in the game forcing ten walks from the opposing pitcher. Getty, Brusokas, Burton, and Cirina Jones (Middleton, Mich.) would each have two hits with Brusokas having 3 RBI's and two doubles in the game.

Game two would be much of the same for the Panthers with them scoring nine runs on ten hits to record their fifth straight victory by a score of 9-2.

With just one run after three innings of play, Davenport would combine for eight runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to take a 9-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth.

Shawnee State would generate a small rally in the sixth inning, hitting two solo home runs to cut the lead to just 9-2. DU would close the door on the rally and shut down their offense again in the seventh to end the game with a 9-2 victory.

Karlee Despres (Belmont, Mich.) would record just her second win on the mound, pitching six complete innings while giving up just two hits. Brianna Carpenter would come in to pitch the seventh and record three straight outs after giving up a walk to begin the inning.

Liz Veltman (Grand Ledge, Mich.) and Carpenter would both finish 2-4 from the plate with an RBI with six other Panther recording hits in the game as well. Brusokas would record her seven homerun of the year with a two-run shot over the centerfield fence.

With the Panthers two wins today and two wins against Rio Grande on Friday they are now 10-0 overall in games played in the state of Ohio and against teams from Ohio.

The Panthers will return to action on Tuesday when they travel up to Big Rapids, Mich. To take on NCAA D2 Ferris State in their final non-conference doubleheader of the season. Game is set for 4:00pm.
