HOLLAND, Mich. – The Panthers could not overcome a 4-0 deficit as they fell 7-3 to Florida Gulf Coast in the first game of pool play in the 2011 ACHA D3 National Tournament. Davenport is now 0-1 in Pool B as they take on top seed California-PA on Thursday.
The Panthers get off to a rough start in the first period, allowing three Eagles' goals. Florida Gulf Coast tallied the first score at 7:32 and followed it up with two power play goals to take a 3-0 lead through the first period.
The second period saw the Eagles add a third power play goal less than one minute into the period for the 4-0 advantage but the Panthers would respond as Garrett Russell (Midland, Mich.) notched his first of two goals at 5:46. Norm Farr would close the gap to 4-2 on a second period goal at 11:34 with Justin Welker (Speedway, Ind.)tallying the assist.
In the third period, the Eagles would push the margin back out to four on a breakaway goal and another score at 12:05 for a 6-2 score. Russell scored his second goal of the game just 21 seconds at 12:26, but the Eagles tallied one more goal for the final 7-3 score.
The Panthers return to the ice tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. to face No. 1-seeded California University of Pennsylvania in their second game of the National Tournament. Live stats will be available at dupanthers.com.
