Cory Hammond (London, Ontario) pitched a nine-inning complete game as the Panthers prevailed 8-0 over the host Comets on Tuesday. The win ups DU's record to 21-10 on the season and the Panthers play again tomorrow in a doubleheader at St. Francis. The first game starts at 1:00 p.m.
Hammond struck out six Comet batters, while only allowing six hits in nine innings of work.
After scoring one run in the first inning, the Panthers exploded for four runs in the fourth. With the basses loaded and no outs, DU knocked in their second run on an RBI from
Chris VanGessel (Grandville, Mich.). After a wild pitch brought in the Panthers' three run,
Travis Laver (Holland, Mich.) singled to center field, scoring
VanGessel from third base. Another single, this time from
Dan Brown (Bay City, Mich.), allowed
Laver to score from second base. The strong inning pushed the Panther advantage to 5-0 after four innings.
Davenport added one run in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings for the final 8-0 score.
Offensively,
Joe Freist (Shepherd, Mich.) had the hot bat, going 2-for-2 with a double and a single and two RBIs. The Panthers roughed up five Comet pitchers as the 11 Panthers' hits came from 10 different batters with six batters notching RBIs
The Panthers continue to play on the road as they travel to St. Francis tomorrow for a doubleheader with the Cougars at 1:00 p.m.
