Long Ball Once Again a Factor in Panthers Split With Madonna

Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score | Video Highlights

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Lady Panthers took on Madonna at home today to complete the four game regular season series. DU would capture game one with a 7-6 victory in the bottom of the seventh before dropping the night cap 13-6. Davenport is now 27-14 overall and 14-2 in WHAC play.

To start game one Davenport would see themselves down 4-1 after two complete innings. In the bottom of the third Kelsey Egyhazi (Mishawaka, Ind.) would single up the middle, followed by a walk by Heather Brusokas (Glendale, Calif.) to give DU runners on first and second with one out. Senior Brianna Carpenter (Irvine, Calif.) would then tie the game up at 4-4 with a three-run homerun to right center, her third of the week.

With the game still tied 4-4 heading into the seventh, Madonna would once again take the lead when Tara LaMilza would connect on two-run homerun to center.

The Panthers would not be phased heading into their final three outs of the game down two runs. Brusokas would start the inning off with a walk, followed by a Carpenter single to put runners on first and second. With the next two batters unable to advance the runners, Liz Veltman (Grand Ledge, Mich.) would force a walk to load the bases with two outs.

Freshman Debra Burton (Cassopolis, Mich.) would then come up big with a two run single to tie the game 6-6. Morgan Greenfield would follow that up with a hard hit ball to the left side of the field to force a Madonna error and allow the game winning run to score from third.

The 7-6 victory would be the third straight for DU over Madonna with Carpenter getting the victory on the mound for the Panthers. Brianna would pitch five and a third innings giving up just one hit with nine strikeouts to earn her sixth win of the year.

The night cap would prove to be a slugfest between both teams with Madonna coming out on top with the 13-6 victory in rainy, windy conditions.

Eight different Panthers would record hits with Burton going 2-3 with three RBI's. After winning game one, Carpenter would record the loss in game two pitching eleven complete innings on the day.

The split gives Davenport the 3-1 series victory with DU now 27-14 overall and 14-2 in WHAC play. The Panthers will be back in action at home tomorrow against Concordia for a 1:00pm conference doubleheader. Live stats and live audio will be available for both games.
