GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The rust definitely showed early on today but the bats finally broke out in game two as the Lady Panthers managed a split with cross-town foe Cornerstone with a 6-4 setback in game one followed by a 7-5 win in the nightcap. Davenport is now 30-15 on the year and 17-3 in league action with a home doubleheader scheduled for 4:00pm on Wednesday vs. Indiana Tech.
Debra Burton (Cassopolis, Mich.) went 3-6 on the day but it was her final single of game two that broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the sixth to give Davenport a 7-5 win over the Golden Eagles.
Heather Brusokas (Glendale, Calif.)hit her 13th homerun of the year and third against CU while finishing 3-6 with a pair of RBI and a pair of runs scored in the doubleheader.
Game one started with Cornerstone gaining the early lead with a run in the third and they followed with one more in the fourth. DU did get on the board in their half of the fourth on a solo homerun from
Katie Cornman (Eastpointe, Mich.) but CU used the long ball to their advantage in the next inning for a 4-1 lead.
Davenport, playing their first game in 9 days after numerous cancellations last week due to rain, fought back to get within one again on a 2-run double off the bat of
Brianna Carpenter (Irvine, Calif.).  But the one-run margin would be short lived as CU brought across two more in the sixth for a 6-3 lead.
After chipping away at the lead with a run in the sixth, the game came down to the Lady Panthers' final at-bat.
Ashlee Olsen (Rockford, Mich.) started the bottom of the seventh with a walk that was followed by
Kelsey Egyhazi (Mishawaka, Ind.) reaching on an error.  A 4-pitch walk to Brusokas loaded the bases with no outs but DU was unable to advance any of the runners eventually falling 6-4.
Sam Cole (Belleville, Mich.), who started the game, suffered her 8th loss of the year while lasting only 4.1 innings and gave up four runs (two earned).
The second game saw the visiting Golden Eagles jump out front once again thanks to some sloppy fielding from the Panthers and they added to it with a 3-run homerun in the second for a 4-0 advantage.
Carpenter led off the bottom of the second with a solo homerun to get the scoring started for DU and they added two more on runs from
Karlee Despres (Belmont, Mich.) and
Liz Veltman (Grand Ledge, Mich.).
After CU upped their lead to 5-3 in the fourth, the Davenport bats came alive in the final few innings.
Heather Brusokas launched a deep two run homerun in the 5th to tie the game and the dramatics of Deb Burton in the sixth gave DU the two-run win.
Carpenter recovered from a slow start on the mound to post her eighth win of the year.
Davenport, now 30-15 on the season and 17-3 in WHAC play, will host Indiana Tech on Wednesday at 3:00pm.  The two teams, whose games were rained out this past Saturday have scheduled a makeup series in Fort Wayne for Thursday.
