WHAC Champions! Panthers Sweep UM-Dearborn

Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

DEARBORN, Mich. – The Davenport softball team clinched their first ever WHAC Championship today with a 7-0 victory in game one against UM-Dearborn followed by a 9-0 five inning victory in game two. The Panthers finish the regular season 34-15 overall and 21-3 in WHAC play, heading into postseason play next week.

Coming into today the Panthers would only need one win to clinch outright first place in the WHAC. Davenport would not disappoint putting together fourteen hits and pitcher Sam Cole (Belleville, Mich.) only allowing two UM-Dearborn hits in route to a 7-0 win.

Brianna Carpenter (Irvine, Calif.) would come up with a big two out hit in the bottom of the third to give DU their first runs of the game. Davenport would add another run in the fourth followed by four in the seventh to seal the victory.

Eight different players would record hits in game one with Ashlee Olsen (Rockford, Mich.) going 3-4 with an RBI, and Heather Brusokas (Glendale, Calif.), Amber Getty (Wayland, Mich.), Katie Cornman (Eastpointe, Mich.) and Carpenter each having two hits.

Cole would get the win on the mound for DU pitching seven complete inning and finishing two hits shy of a perfect game.

With the conference championship all wrapped up, Davenport would stay hungry for another win in the second game of the doubleheader using the long ball to give them a 9-0 five inning run rule victory.

Ali Dawson (Galesburg, Mich.) and Carpenter would both record three-run homeruns in the second inning in route to Davenport's fifth straight victory. Brusokas would be the only Panther to pick up multiple hits in the game, going 2-3 with a double.

Along with a great performance at the plate, Carpenter would pitch five innings of scoreless play, giving up five hits with seven strikeouts to earn her eight win of the year.

With the two victories today Davenport will wrap up the regular season with a 34-15 record and a program best 21 wins in conference play in just their third year of existence.

“This conference season has been one filled with much adversity for our team. We have had to overcome illnesses, injuries, and adverse weather conditions all year which shows not only physical strength but also our mental toughness that we had to bring day in and day out throughout conference play. This is just one piece of the puzzle for this team as we head into the conference tournament next week.” commented head coach Ronda Varnesdeel.

The Panthers will claim the #1 seed in the conference tournament next Thursday and will take on the #8 seed in the opening round at Bailey Park in Battle Creek, Mich. Live stats and live audio will be available for all tournament games.
