Game Two Box Score
WYOMING, Mich. - Five homeruns in game one and one more in the second lifted the Lady Panthers to a sweep of Cornerstone on Thursday afternoon. Davenport mercied the Golden Eagles 15-0 in five innings in the opener before holding on to a 4-3 win in the nightcap. DU, now 21-12 (8-0 WHAC) has won 13 in a row with a DH scheduled for Friday at home against Siena Heights.
Heather Brusokas (Glendale, Calif.) connected on two deep homeruns in the opener as
Ali Dawson (Galesburg, Mich.),
Brianna Carpenter (Irvine, Calif.) (two on the day) and
Debra Burton (Cassopolis, Mich.) all went deep in the 15-0 and 4-3 wins for Davenport.
After a slow start in the opener that saw many DU players connect but just not find open field, the bats finally got going in the third after a lead-off walk from Deb Burton. After a double from
Ashlee Olsen (Rockford, Mich.) that gave DU runners on second and third,
Amber Getty (Wayland, Mich.) brought home the first of eight runs in the inning for the Lady Panthers.
The homerun barage then got going with
Heather Brusokas blasting a long ball to dead center. Bri Carpenter made it back to back HR's with a shot to right center. A
Cirina Jones (Middleton, Mich.) triple followed just before
Ali Dawson brought her home with a long ball of her own.
Brusokas would later add her second of the game in the next inning as
Amber Getty scored on the play. The scoring would continue in the fifth with five more runs highlighted by Deb Burton's second homerun of her freshman campaign.
On the mound,
Sam Cole (Belleville, Mich.) was once again solid as the sophomore picked up her 12th win by allowing only five hits and three walks while striking out a season best 10 batters.
The second game was much more of a defensive battle as the Davenport bats went quiet. DU did manage to get an unearned run across in the first inning when Getty came around to score on a ball put in play by Carpenter.
The next three innings saw Davenport get only three base-runners and at the same time see Cornerstone load the bases twice but game two starter Bri Carpenter got out of every jam to keep DU in front 1-0.
The bats finally came out of their mid-game slump in the fifth when Carpenter helped her own cause with a 2-run shot after
Amber Getty came across on a single from
Heather Brusokas one batter earlier.
The Golden Eagles finally got on the scoreboard in their half of the sixth with three runs but it was not enough as Carpenter finished off CU with a solid 1-2-3 inning in the 7th to pick up her fifth win of the season.
Davenport will host Siena Heights on Friday at 4:00pm. The location of the game will be announced in the morning. Live stats and audio will be provided.
