DU Baseball Goes 1-1 on Day 1 of WHAC Tournament

Livonia, Mich. - The Panthers dropped their first game of the WHAC Tournament 3-1 to Indiana Tech then won 4-3 over Siena Heights to advance to a second matchup with Indiana Tech tomorrow at Madonna University. The winner will play Madonna in the champion game, while the loser will be eliminated.

The Panthers bats were cold in the first game with Indiana Tech as DU could only muster three hits for the nine inning game.

Indiana Tech put up an early run in the second inning as a Warriors' single brought in a base runner from second base. Tech added two more runs in the third.

The Panthers tried to rally in the sixth inning as they got a ground-rule double from Dan Brown (Bay City, Mich.) to start the inning. Mike Allen, the next batter, singled to put runners on the corners for DU. Travis Laver's (Holland, Mich.) RBI brought in Brown for the Panthers' only run.

Tucker Gernhard (Stafford, Va.) was the starting hurler for the Panthers, allowing three runs on seven hits in six innings. Zak Gonzalez (Comstock Park, Mich.) pitched the final three innings for the Panthers, allowing three hits.

The Panthers avoided elimination in the second game, knocking Siena Heights out of the tournament, 4-3.

After only three hits in the first game, DU notched 12 hits in the second game.

DU scored three of their four runs in the second inning as a Jordan Bigger (Rockford, Ill.) sac fly and a Travis Laver RBI single brought in Panther runs.

The Saints tied the game in the fifth as SHU scored two runs with the bases loaded to tie the game at 3-3.

In the seventh inning, Matt McNeil's (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) RBI double scored the game winning run for the Panthers.

McNeil had a strong game for the Panthers, going 3-5 with the one RBI.

Matt Loomis (Alma, Mich.) made the start in the second game, going 5.1 innings and allowing three runs on two hits. Zak Gonzalez (Comstock Park, Mich.) came in for relief and picked up the win for DU. Jarrett Luyk (Hudsonville, Mich.) pitched the final inning for the save.

The game between Indiana Tech and Davenport is set for tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. at Ilitch Ballpark. Live stats will be provided. The winner will play at 3:00 p.m. against Madonna.
