Brusokas Scores Twice in 2-1 Extra-Inning Win over Madonna

Lady Panthers advance to WHAC Championship game at 7:00pm

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - Heather Brusokas hit a solo homerun in the fifth and scored on a bases loaded walk in the eighth as Davenport defeated Madonna University 2-1 in the WHAC Tournament at Bailey Park. DU will now play the Indiana Tech vs. Madonna winner tonight at 7:00pm.

A pitchers dual eventually ended with some costly errors and a few walks as Davenport remained undefeated at the 2011 WHAC Championships in Battle Creek.

Heather Brusokas (Glendale, Calif.) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning when the senior blasted a deep homerun to left center with two outs.  The score did not hold up that long as Madonna got it back in the bottom of the frame with a two-out single from Jackie Barley.

Jessica Irwin and Sam Cole (Belleville, Mich.) then controlled the game for the next few innings as the two were dominate all day.  Cole finished with seven innings pitched, five hits allowed and five strikeouts.  Irwin, the WHAC pitcher of the year, went the distance and posted 13 K's to go along with only four hits allowed.

It was the walks that hurt the Crusaders pitcher down the stretch though as a lead-off free pass to Brusokas in the 8th came back to haunt her.  After getting one out, an error by MU put runners on the corners for the Panthers.

A strikeout and a second free pass later put the game in the hands of Liz Veltman (Grand Ledge, Mich.), who homered in dramatic fashion on Thursday to defeat Aquinas in extra innings.  Veltman drew a bases loaded walk to put DU up 2-1.

Karlee Despres (Belmont, Mich.) came into the game and got three outs to pick up the first save of the year for the junior pitcher.

Davenport will now face the winner of Indiana Tech vs. Madonna at 7:00pm tonight.
