Panthers Have Hats Off Performance; Defeat Robert Morris 11-1

Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- The hats were flying at Patterson Ice Center as Zachary Bodziak and Cody Mathieu each recorded their first career hat tricks as Panthers. Bryon Guerin added two goals and an assist as the Panthers won their 3rd consecutive game.

After letting up an early goal, Davenport put on a scoring clinic as they scored eleven unanswered goals. Robert Morris won a face-off and scored just three seconds into a power play to take a 1-0 lead. Then eleven seconds later, Panthers first year forward Zachary Bodziak netted his first of three goals on the night.

Soon thereafter Mike Soto found Bryon Guerin in front of the net to give Davenport the lead, which they would hold for the remainder of the game.A power play goal by Bodziak and goals from Jordan Steger and Cody Mathieu gave Davenport a 5-1 lead after the first period.

The Panthers continued to pour on goals in the second period thanks to many power play opportunities. Davenport was the more disciplined team as they had only three penalty kills compared to eleven power plays. DU refrained from retaliating to the dirty play and many cheap shots from RMU.

Bodziak and Guerin each netted power play goals early in the second period to give Davenport a 7-1 lead. DU continued to skate hard and added goals from Chad Ouellette and Mathieu to gain a 9-1 lead heading into the final stanza.

In the final period Zach Feher added a power play goal with over fifteen minutes remaining on a setup from Bodziak and Ouellette. With two goals each, Guerin and Mathieu were both searching for one more goal to join Bodziak in completing the hat trick. Guerin was inches from completing his hat trick as his shot clanked of the cross bar. Mathieu, the 6-8 defensemen, succeeded in completing his first career hat trick as he added the Panthers fifth power play goal of the game with 2:20 left in the game to end the scoring.

Post-Game Quotes-Head Coach Chris Green

On teams discipline “We showed great discipline tonight. Once we got the lead there was some dirty play and lots of cheap shots, but our guys choose not to retaliate.”

On play of Cody Mathieu “I was really happy with the way Cody played tonight. He has shown a lot of improvement as the season has progressed. Earlier in the season he was having trouble staying out of the penalty box, but now he is doing a great job on the penalty kill and is adding some valuable minutes on the blue line.”
