Davenport Completed Weekend Sweep of Aquinas with 6-3 Win

Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After trailing 2-0 midway through the first period, Davenport scored four unanswered goals and recorded five goals in the second period to complete the weekend sweep the of Aquinas. Jake Otto and Zack Feher led the Panthers with two goals each. Davenport will be in action again next weekend when they take on Lansing CC.

Both Davenport and Aquinas had a few chances early in the first period but neither team was able to convert. But it was the Saints who would strike first with 7:46 remaining in the period. After Aquinas netted a power play goal to put the Panthers down two, Patrick Martin was able to respond with a power play of his own to pull Davenport within one.

Davenport didn't waste any time in the second period getting a goal from Jake Otto 1:27 into the period. Garrett Russell gave the Panthers their first lead of the game several minutes later when he finished on a pass from Martin and Byron Guerin. With 9:05 left in the period Dugan Kelly put away a power play goal to increase the Panther lead to two. Aquinas had cut the lead to one but a Kelly power play goal with 1:42 remaining and a Zack Feher goal with 14 second left in the period gave Davenport a 6-3 advantage.

The game got started to get chippy in the third period but neither team would put a score on the board. John Cruse picked up the win for the Panthers in net stopping 32 of the 35 shots he faced.

The Panthers will return to action next weekend with a home-and-home series against Lansing Community College. The Panthers will be on the road Friday night before returning to Patterson Ice Center on Saturday.

Post-Game Quotes – Head Coach Chris Green

Thoughts on game – “It was a heated game, we have a rivalry with this team against a former coach of ours. He's a great coach and he's doing a great job with the program and he's doing good things with this team. The emotions got high out there and it was a good hockey game.”

Down one after the first then score five in the second, what was the difference in the second period – “We were down two there for a second and came back with one in the first and then we got five in the second.  That's a great question, we asked the guys the same thing. We didn't come out focused, we didn't come out ready to play. And when my guys do you see how they can play. Right now it's a young team and we have to find consistency. We have to come out and do that every day.”
