CLERMONT, Fla. – The Davenport softball team completed day two of their spring break trip at the NTC fields today.  They split a pair of games with a loss to NCAA D2 Saint Anselm (3-4) and a convincing win over Goshen College (10-1).  The Panthers now sit at 3-1 going into their third day of the trip tomorrow.  They will face Adrian College at 9:00 am and Goshen again at 11:00 am.

Saint Anselm got off to an early lead in the first game of the day scoring in the second inning when Kat Scafidi stole home.  The game would see no more runs until the top of the seventh.  Davenport struggled offensively against the Hawks' freshmen pitcher Alexis Bogdanovich.

Amber Getty broke the hitless streak for the Panthers with a double to left center field.  Morgan Greenfield advanced her to third with a sacrifice bunt, then Liz Veltman hit a sacrifice fly to drive home the run.  The Hawks failed to reach base in the bottom of the seventh so the game entered extra innings.

In the eighth, per extra inning rules, DU started with a runner on second.  A sacrifice fly from Katie Cornman moved Meagan Jenkins to third and Tami Weber then hit a sacrifice fly to score the runner putting DU up 2-1.  Paige Sant'Angelo (2B) and Ali Dawson (error) would both reach base, but the Panthers couldn't bring them in.

Saint Anselm would match the Panthers in the bottom of the eighth with a run of their own extending the game to a ninth inning with the score knotted at 2 runs apiece.  With a runner again starting on second base, Greenfield was able to advance her to third with a ground out, then Veltman scored the runner with a single up the middle giving the lead back to DU at 3-2.

In the bottom of the ninth, Sam Cole struggled to deliver strikes as the Hawks tied up the game on a single RBI.  Then with the bases loaded Cole walked her second batter of the inning giving Saint Anselm the 4-3 victory.

The second game of the day was a completely different story as Davenport had a plethora of hits against the Maple Leafs.  DU did not waste any time as they put three runs on the board right away in the first inning.  Getting hits in the first were Veltman, Deb Burton, Cornman (2B, 2 RBI), and Sant'Angelo (RBI).

The third inning saw the Panthers add five more on the scoreboard.  Veltman doubled, Cornman singled to drive in her third run of the game.  Dawson and Karli Myers both singled, while Getty added a doubled to drive in two runs of her own.

DU would add two more in the fourth giving them a 10-0 lead.  Goshen was able to get a run on the board in the fifth inning, but it wasn't enough as the game was decided with a 9 run lead after five innings.  Arlie DeYoung went the distance in her first varsity start.  She had two strikeouts in the game.

Post-Game Comments

Ronda Varnesdeel on her teams performance in game one:  "We didn't deserve to win in the end. We did fight but for six innings we did not play Davenport softball. We had lapses on offense and needed to make sure we are mentally and physically focused on defense and we did not do that in the first game."

Arlie DeYoung on her first collegiate victory: "I was nervous at first but I knew my defense would have my back. It was a sigh of relief that I could get my first win under my belt which will allow me to build my confidence heading into the rest of the season."

Paige Sant'Angelo on her offensive approach the second game: "In the first three games I was focusing way too much mentally on my swing and I think the second game today I was able to just have fun and relax in batters box."
