DU Baseball takes on Webber International in a Day/Night Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BABSON PARK, Fla. – The Panthers entered day four in Florida with a 1-3 record and went out to earn a split today in their double header with the Warriors of Webber International University.  The Warriors took the first game 8-1, while the Panthers took game two 11-2 as the Panther bats exploded for 13 hits.  The split brings the team's season record to 4-6 overall and 2-4 on the Florida trip.

In game one the Panthers held a 1-0 lead after 4 ½ innings thanks to the start of Alex Ketchum, however after the Warrior at-bat in the 5th Davenport was behind 5-1.  Davenport would give up 3 more runs to Webber in the 6th which put the game away.  The Panthers final line was a run on four hits while committing three errors on the day.

The Panther's offense in game one was held in check, however Drew Kennedy, Cam Cooper, Brandon Bongard, and Jotham Woo all had one hit in game one.  Woo would earn the only RBI driving in Bongard in the Panther 4th inning.

Game two was a complete mirror image of game one as the Panther bats were dynamic as well as their pitching staff.  Jotham Woo continued his strong offensive day going 2 for 2 with 2 RBI and scoring 2 runs.  The Panthers took control of the game when they came to bat in the top of the 5th inning with the game tied at 2-2.

Davenport exploded over their next two at-bats for 4 runs in the 5th to push the score to 6-2 Panthers and followed up in the 6th inning with another 5 runs to push their lead to 9 at 11-2.  The Panthers would force the Warriors to use 7 different pitchers in game two with it taking four of the seven to earn 3 outs.

Austin Licon also showed patience at the plate as he went 2 for 4 and led the Panthers with 3 RBI.  Jason Pierce continued his strong showing in Florida as well as he went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI and 3 runs scored.  Pierce also earned 2 of the 7 Panther walks in game two.  The drive of the night came off the bat of Brandon Bongard who tripled to the wall in right center.   Bongard would go 1 for 5 with 2 RBI and a run scored in game two.

On the defensive side of the ball Davenport got a great effort from starter Colten Bredeweg who went 2 1/3 innings giving up 2 hits and 2 runs while walking 3.  The show however was stolen by the performance of freshman Ryan Butzer we went 4 2/3 giving up 3 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks and striking out 6 to earn the nightcap win.

Post-Game Notes – Jason Pierce continues to impress as today he went 2 for 6, had 1 RBI, and scored 3 runs… Jotham Woo also impressed today going 3 for 5 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored…DU plays again tomorrow at 1:00 pm as they travel to Winter Haven, Fla. Post-Game QuotesKevin Tidey

Overall thoughts on today's doubleheader  – I thought game one was disappointing because Alex Ketchum came out and put together a good performance but our offense didn't back him up.  As for game two, obviously it was nice to see the guys bounce back, but that is the sort of offensive output  we have been waiting for, especially guys hitting the ball when we had runners in scoring position.  In game two we had 23 quality at-bats versus 7 in game one.   The dominant performance of Ryan Butzer was much needed.
