CLERMONT, Fla. – Coming off a day of rest, the Davenport softball team showed up focused and ready for action this morning.  They picked up an 8-0 five inning win over Houghton College then avenged an earlier loss to Saint Anselm College defeating them 2-1.  With a record of now 7-1, the Panthers will face Saint Anselm again tomorrow at 9:00 am followed by SUNY Canton at 11:00 am.

Against Houghton the Panthers got their bats going early and didn't stop.  Liz Veltman and Amber Getty both had big games at the plate with three hits apiece.  Veltman started off her day with a two-run homer in the first inning.  She followed that with a single and a double.  Getty pounded out two doubles and a single.  The two combined for four RBIs.

Paige Sant'Angelo, Morgan Greenfield, and Karlee Despres would drive the other runs in for the Panthers as they made quick work of the Highlanders in just five innings of play to wrap up the 8-0 victory.

Despres got her first start of the season, joining the team on Tuesday after her efforts with the women's basketball team in the WHAC tournament.  In just four innings of work she amassed 10 strikeouts and earned the win.

Her number would get called again against the Hawks of Saint Anselm.  Despres would stay in for three innings sitting down three batters before Sam Cole took over.  Cole struck out six batters and earned her fifth win of the season as the team defeated the Hawks 2-1.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth inning.  With two runners on base, Getty singled to right field bringing the first run for DU.  The second run would come in on an error by the Hawks.  Saint Anselm would get one run back in the bottom of the sixth on a Davenport error, but that's where the score would stand.

Post-Game Comments

Liz Veltman on her performance at the plate in game one: "I felt like I was seeing the ball well and also had a lot confidence in my swing while at the plate. It was nice to perform in game one of a doubleheader since we had had trouble in our previous games getting our offense going."

Karlee Despres on how it felt pitching for the first time this season: "It was amazing! It was a feeling I normally don't get to experience this early in the season and it was great just be out there with my team. Coming in I knew I had 100% support from my teammates which helped calm my nerves and settle me on the mound."
