Box Score ADRIAN, Mich. – The Davenport baseball team entered into their non-conference match up with Siena Heights winners of their last 6 straight games. The Panthers earned a 6-5 victory on the back of an early offensive output and a late game pitching performance from junior left-handed pitcher,
Corey Anderson.
Davenport picked up offensively right where they had left off in Florida and Indianapolis with 3 runs in the 1st inning.
Jason Pierce got things started with a single and
Brandon Bongard followed the single by being hit by a pitch. That set the table for
Austin Licon to single through the right side of the infield and drive in Pierce.
Jotham Woo would then double to drive in Bongard. Mike Allen would then sacrifice in
Eric Cummings who was a pinch runner for Licon.
Mike Allen would be the big offensive bat for the Panthers in the 3rd inning as well. The inning would start with a
Brandon Bongard walk after which he would steal his way to third base. After a
Jotham Woo base on balls, Mike Allen would come to the plate looking to drive in some more Panther runs. Using the strong wind that was blowing out to left field, Allen drove a pitch high and down the left field line and over the wall for his third homerun of the young season.
Davenport got a quality start from
Drew Sain who went 4 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, a walk while striking out 6 Saints hitters to earn the win. The Saints would rally in the 7th to get within a single run, however
Corey Anderson would come in to shut the Saints down and earn the save. Anderson's final line was 2 innings, 1 hit, no runs, and no walks while striking out one Saints batter.
The Panthers travel to Mount Pleasant tomorrow for a single 9 inning game with CMU before beginning WHAC play with against Indiana Tech on March 17th and 18th.
Post-Game Notes – Davenport runs their winning streak to 7 pushing them to 10-6 overall… Mike Allen continues to swing well as he was 1 for 3 today with 4 RBI… Make sure to get out this weekend as the Panthers have 4 home games with Indiana Tech on their home field at Kentwood High School… Check out www.dupanthers.com to follow the Panthers all season long via LiveStats.
Post-Game Quotes – Corey Anderson and Mike Allen
Anderson on battling through a tough spot in the 8th inning – I just work on keeping my mind right and focusing on the next batter in the box. It won't ever do us any good as a team to look back or worry about mistakes because at one point or another, we all will make one. I knew my teammates would make plays behind me.
Allen on his approach in the batter's box - I've just been focusing on swinging at a good hitter's pitch rather than a pitcher's pitch. That also includes working into good hitter's counts and staying focused throughout the game. My last at-bat today was a bad one because I didn't swing at my pitch and I popped out.
