Box Score Vineland, NJ. – Davenport will have a shot at the National title later tonight after knocking of California University of Pennsylvania. The Panthers were the more disciplined team and went 5-13 on the power play.
Bryon Guerin and
Chad Ouellette scored two goals apiece for Davenport.
After Cal U took 13 penalties against Hope College, Davenport knew that they would have to capitalize on their power play opportunities. I took only 47 seconds for the Vulcans to commit their first penalty.
Bryon Guerin responded by scoring Davenports first of five power play goals on the game. Two minutes later Guerin set up
Chad Ouellette on the power play to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
In the second period both teams had their scoring chances, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. Davenport had 18 shots in the period compared to only 6 for the Vulcans.
In the third period Davenport got things going again on the power play. Two minutes into the period
Ben Duthler put home a rebound off a
Garrett Russell shot. Less than a minute later the Panthers came flying back at the Vulcans.
Chad Ouellette netted his second goal of the game to give Davenport a 4-0 lead.
From that point on play started to get physical. The Vulcans, who average 34 penalty mins/game, had six players ejected in the final stanza and racked up 77 minutes in the period. The Panthers were able to keep playing with level heads and added two more power play goals in the period.
Bryon Guerin added his second goal of the game and
Sam Waldhart added a goal to finish up the scoring for the Panthers.
John Cruse had a big game in net for the Panthers and was named the Combat player of the game. Cruse registered 20 saves in the game and had a shutout going until he was pulled with 7:30 left in the game.
Davenport will face fellow MCHC member Adrian College-Gold in the championship game tonight at 8:00 PM. The Panthers will look to avenged two regular season losses to Bulldogs. The Championship game will be broadcasted live online at Fasthockey.com.
