Davenport Falls Short in Championship Game to Adrian

Box Score Vineland, NJ. - Davenport fell into a 3-0 deficit half way through the 2nd period before they started their comeback efforts. The Panthers responded with two quick goals but were unable to finish the comeback as Adrian went on to win 4-2.

In just the programs fourth year the D3 hockey team made their first appearance in the National championship game. The Panthers faced off against MCHC foe Adrian-Gold for the third time this season.

For the first time at Nationals the Panthers fell behind in the first period. Adrian took a 1-0 lead 11:38 into the first period after Bo Beapre's shot went off the post and trickled across the goal line. Davenport outshot the Bulldogs 13-9 in the first period, but was unable to find the back of the net.

Adrian began to break the game open early in the second period. Just under three minutes into the period Russ Rizzo was able to slip behind the Panther defense and score on a breakaway. Moments later Eddie Schaeffer added another goal to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.

With 7:40 left in the period the Panthers netted their first goal of the game. Zack Feher picked up the goal after Garrett Russell won the face off. Close to a minute later Mike Soto pulled the Panthers within one goal after scoring a power play goal.  However, two minutes later Russ Rizzo was able to sneak in behind the Davenport defense and crushed the Panthers momentum by scoring his second goal of the game.

The Panthers came out in the third period and put it all on the line. Davenport registered 12 shots on net, but the Bulldogs defense prevailed as they sat back and protected their lead.

John Cruse was in net for the Panthers and recorded 28 saves. Cruse was voted 2nd team all-tourney while Mike Soto and Bryon Guerin received 1st team honors.

Davenport took a tough route to the National Championship game as they knocked off a No.1 seed and two No.2 seeds… The Panthers end their season with a 33-12 record. The 33 wins sets a new school record for most wins in a season.
