KENTWOOD, Mich. – The Panther baseball squad put up some record setting offensive numbers in a high scoring game with the Cardinals of Concordia. Davenport fell behind 7-1 after 3.5 innings only to storm back behind the hot bats to take the single nine inning affair by a final of 17-12.
The Panthers and Cardinals combined for 29 runs and 38 hits in what was an offensive show that would make any pitcher cringe. The game started with Concordia taking a seemingly commanding 7-1 lead after they batted in the 4th, however this was about the time the Panther bats woke up and began the record setting day.
The scoring really started for Davenport in the 4th inning with a Mike Allen single and a
Drew Kennedy homerun. The Panthers continued to get on base as
Brian Spykerman crushed a double to the gap in right center and
Jordan Bigger stepped into a pitch to earn first base. This was followed by a sacrifice bunt from
Cam Cooper and a sac fly by
Derrick Gentile to score Spykerman. Bigger would then score on a single back up the middle by
Brandon Bongard who went 4 for 5 on the day, scoring 2 runs and driving in 4 RBI.
Bongard and Kennedy would both drive in 4 RBI on the day to lead the Panthers to a school record 17 RBI in a single game, breaking the previous record set against Oberlin College on March 7th, 2009. Breaking this record would tie into another record previously set versus Oberlin on March 7th, 2009, 16 runs scored in a single game, which the Panthers would also surpass as they would score 17 on the day.
The Panthers would string together impressive at bats in innings 6, 7, and 8 as they would put a combined 11 runs to take control of the game. Much of the offensive success was due to the record setting day the Panthers were putting together. This time they set a new team record for doubles in a single game as they hit 7 doubles versus Concordia today. Davenport broke a record that had been set on March 7th, 2009 versus Oberlin College.
The Panthers would get some quality pitching down the stretch as
Cory Hammond would earn the win in a relief role.
Ryan Koop also pitched well in relief going 1 inning, giving up 1 hit, but surrendering no walks.
Corey Anderson would come in to close out the game as he pitched the top of the 9th and faced the minimum 3 batters.
Post-Game Quotes – Kevin Tidey
Thoughts on record setting day offensively – Well I think we continue to show that we are mastering the art of winning ugly as our offense bailed out our defense today and the four errors we had. However, I think we continue to battle and it showed today as we had multiple quality at-bats and hits with 2 outs.
