DU Completes Weekend Sweep of Lourdes

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

SYLVANIA, Ohio. – The Panther baseball team used timely hitting and solid pitching to win in Game 1 and mimicked themselves to complete the weekend sweep of Lourdes.  In Game 1, Jotham Woo paced the Panthers as he got on base four times in a 12-2 DU victory.  Cory Hammond pitched a complete game 2-hitter in Game 2 to lead the Panthers in a 9-0 victory.

Game One

The Panthers started the game by giving up a run and a couple hits to Lourdes who had been held hitless in Game 2 on Saturday.  However the Gray Wolves would only muster five hits and two runs over 7 innings of play while Davenport used 12 hits to score 12 runs in the mercy rule shortened Game 1.

Jotham Woo was seeing the ball very well in his 4 plate appearances in the game as he went 3 for 3, walked once, scored two runs and had 2 RBI.  Woo's three hits were all for extra bases as Woo would tally two doubles and a triple.  Eric Cummings continued his improved play from Saturday as he went 3 for 4, scored twice and had 2 RBI to help lead the Panther attack in the Sunday opener.

The Panthers got a quality start from Drew Kennedy who improved to 2-2 on the season.  Kennedy went 5 innings giving up 3 hits, no earned runs, a walk, and struck out 8 Gray Wolves.  Jarrett Luyk and Zach Liebman pitched well in relief and combined to go 2 innings, gave up 2 hits and no walks.

Game Two

Davenport got a stellar pitching performance from Cory Hammond today as he went 7 innings giving up only two hits to earn a complete game shutout.  Hammond struck out four Lourdes batters while walking only a pair.  Hammond worked well all afternoon getting ahead of batters and working quickly to keep the Lourdes hitters off balance.

The Panthers hitters took over from there as they put up another 12 hit game giving them 24 on the afternoon.  Drew Kennedy went 2 for 3 while driving in two RBI to spark the Panthers.  Austin Licon went 0 for 1, but had 3 RBI including a sacrifice fly in the 4th inning that drove in Brandon Bongard.  Bongard did damage at the plate as well going 2 for 2 and scoring a run.

Post-Game Quotes – Kevin Tidey

Thoughts on Panther pitching over the weekend – I thought our guys threw well, but more importantly they gained some needed confidence to pound the strike zone.

Thoughts on overall series play – We played better this weekend, doing a better job of hitting in situations on Sunday than on Saturday.  We hit fewer fly balls as the weekend moved forward and started putting the ball in play when the situation called for it.

Post-Game Notes – The wins today push the Panthers to 17-9: 6-2 WHAC… The Panther pitchers allowed 15 hits and 3 runs over four games this weekend … The Panther offense produced 32 runs on 41 hits… DU next takes to the field on March 28th as they step out of the WHAC to travel to face Rochester College before traveling to play UNOH in a early pivotal WHAC match-up… Check out www.dupanthers.com to follow the Panthers all season long via LiveStats.
