Panthers Sweep Rochester 6-0, 7-4; Improve to 19-9

Davenport faves tough test this weekend in 4-game series at Northwestern Ohio

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Davenport played a road double-header at Rochester on Wednesday and came away with a sweep by winning 6-0 in the opener and holding off the Warriors 7-4 in the nightcap. The Panthers are now 19-9 on the year and will face a tough road test this weekend when they travel to Northwestern Ohio for a 4-game set with the Racers.

Game 1

Davenport continued their solid pitching as of late behing the arm of senior Jarrett Luyk.  The reliever converted starter went all seven innings while giving up just five hits and striking out seven in the Panthers 6-0 win. Offensively, the team was led by Austin Licon who went 2-4 with an RBI.

Derrick Gentile got his day off with a 1-3 performance while scoring two runs as the Panthers jumped on the Warriors early with three in the first and all six of their runs came in the first four innings.

Game 2

The bats started quickly again for the Panthers as they posted a three-spot in the top of the first inning to back DU starter Alex Ketchum.  Licon picked up an RBI single scoring Gentile who reached on a double down the line to get the runs started.  Michael Allen then hit a rocket off the left field wall to score both Licon and Jo Woo.

Rochester got their first runs of the day in the second and third but middle-reliever Ryan Butzer came in and shut down the Warriors offense.  Butzer would go on to pick up his second win of the year by finishing with a line of 4IP, 4H, 2R (unearned) and four strikeouts. Allen picked up his third RBI of the game in a 3-run fifth at Eric Cummings also got an RBI on a sac-fly and Jo Woo brought home Gentile.

Davenport is now 19-9 on the year and have won 8 straight.  The Panthers head to Lima, Ohio on Saturday and Sunday to face the Racers of Northwestern Ohio in a 4-game set.  Both days are scheduled for 1:00pm starts and the Davenport Athletics Network will have each one.
