FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Davenport softball team was looking stay with the front runners in conference play after their doubleheader today at Indiana Tech.  They came away with a split (2-3; 13-10) and fell to 4th place in WHAC standings.  They will be back in action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Concordia.

The games today were night and day different.  The first game saw a defensive battle, while a combined 23 runs were scored in game two.  In the opening matchup, the game remained scoreless for the first three innings.  In the top of the fourth inning, Katie Cornman hit her seventh homerun of the season to put the Panthers up 1-0.

DU added another run when Paige Sant'Angelo reached base and scored on two Warrior errors.  Tech evened the score at two after Megan Groce hit a two-run homer.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the 10th inning.  Pitcher Karlee Despres walked Tech's first batter of the inning putting the tying run on base.  The Panthers sat down the next two batters, but they couldn't close out the inning as Patrice Suplicki drove in the winning run to wrap up the 3-2 victory.

In game two, Tech had a huge first inning scoring seven runs.  DU had to claw their way back from there.  The Panthers added two runs in both the second and third innings, but were still down 10-4 after three.  The DU defense would hold the Warriors scoreless for the rest of the game, however.

Davenport started their comeback in the fifth inning with two runs scored when Ashleigh Blovsky reached base on a Tech error bringing in the two runners on base.  That brought the Panthers within four runs.  Karlie Myers would add two more for DU in the sixth on a two-run homer.

Still down 10-8 in the seventh, DU had their backs against the wall.  The Panthers put together five hits in the inning and scored five runs with the help of three Tech errors and a couple wild pitches.

Pitcher Sam Cole made quick work in the bottom of the seventh, including two strikeouts.  The Panthers completed the comeback winning 13-10.  DU's season record now stands at 23-13, while they are 2-2 in the WHAC.

Post-Game Comments - Ronda Varnesdeel

"We were very lucky to walk away with a split today. It was nice to see our girls fight back in game two after falling down 7-0 and see some player bust out of slumps from the plate."
