GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport stepped out of WHAC play today with a single nine-inning game against another MIAA opponent in Calvin College. The Panthers rode the confidence from this past weekends series win versus Madonna to earn a 7-4 victory over the Knights.
Davenport continued their early inning offensive success with three runs over the first three innings. In the first inning
Brandon Bongard kept the Panther first inning alive when he earned a two out base on balls. Bongard then advanced to third on a
Austin Licon single to left field and would score on a
Jotham Woo single. Davenport would eventually load the bases, but fail to score again in the first.
In the third inning the Panthers would score two more runs to take a 3-0 lead over Calvin College. Once again
Jotham Woo would help the Panther offense get on the board when he singled up the middle, which advanced
Austin Licon to second. Mike Allen would drive both Woo and Licon in on a two run double to center field. Allen would reach third on a single from Derek Gentile, but would be stranded there when the Knights turned a double play to end the Panther third inning.
DU would go on to score four more runs between the fourth and sixth innings to reach their final of seven on the game. In the fourth the Panthers got two runs from a
Brandon Bongard single that scored
Cam Cooper and
Chad Cline. Cline had reached on a single to lead off the inning, which was followed by a
Cam Cooper double to left field. Cline would contribute again in the fifth when he drove in Mike Allen who had reached on a single through the left side of the infield. The final Davenport runs came in the sixth when Bongard scored on an
Austin Licon single up the middle. Bongard had reached on his double to right center, his second hit of the game.
Six Davenport batters had multi-hit games tonight, including

Jotham Woo, Mike Allen and
Chad Cline all earned two hits on the day.

Chad Detwiler came in to relieve Ketchum in the fourth inning and would eventually earn the win, his first of the season. Detwiler went four innings pitched, gave up seven hits, two runs (one earned), walked none, and struck out two Knights.
Once again the Panthers got outstanding performances from their late inning guys,
