MIDLAND, Mich. – DU again played out of conference today in a matchup with Northwood University, a Division II school and member of the GLIAC. The Panthers led throughout most of the contest before dropping the game on a walk off single to give the Timberwolves a 7-6 victory.
Davenport jumped out early on Northwood with a 4-0 lead after four full innings. The Panthers were able to jump out to an early lead thanks in part to the pitching performance by starter
Zach Liebman. Liebman would give DU five solid innings giving up one run on five hits, one base on balls, while striking out one Timberwolves batter. Liebman would get help behind him from his teammates, who made solid defensive plays.
Brian Spykerman had a couple great plays at first base including a diving catch on a sharply hit ball in the third inning.
Jotham Woo and
Brandon Bongard both also made outstanding catches from their outfield positions to help Liebman.
The Panther bats were active early in the game as DU put up four runs over the first four innings, two in the second and two in the fourth.
Cam Cooper continued to hit the ball well going 2 for 4 with two RBI and scoring twice.
Brandon Bongard also hit the ball well with a 3 for 5 day driving in two RBI.
Brian Spykerman added to his solid defensive performance by having an equally solid day offensively. Spykerman went 2 for 4 from the plate scoring twice and diving in a huge RBI in the later innings.
The ninth inning proved to be the most exciting as the teams entered tied at four runs each. In the ninth the Panthers would score two runs which seemed to deflate the Timberwolves. However, Northwood would counter the Panthers ninth with a three run inning, the third run coming on a one out single to left field that scored the game winning run, handing Davenport the loss.
