ADRIAN, Mich. – The Davenport baseball opened WHAC Tournament play today with an 8-1 loss to Madonna University. The loss pushed the Panthers into the losers bracket to face the Racers of UNOH. Davenport scored a 7-2 victory over UNOH to keep a run at the tournament championship alive.
Game vs. Madonna
Davenport faced perennial WHAC power Madonna in their first conference tournament game, unfortunately the Panther bats were unable to solve Crusaders starter Jeremy Gooding. DU scored only a single run on eight hits while the Madonna bats pushed across eight runs on 12 hits.
Seven of Davenport's eight hits came from two Panther players,
Eric Cummings and
Drew Kennedy. Cummings went 3 for 5 with an RBI, the loan Panther run. That run was scored by Kennedy who went 4 for 4 from the plate as the Panthers starting first baseman.
Jordan Anderson was the Panther starter versus Madonna; however he was unable to get on track and took the loss to fall to 7-2 on the year. Anderson would go four innings allowing four runs on 6 hits, two walks, and a strike out.
Cory Hammond also pitched for Davenport; he would go two innings allowing four runs on four hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.
Jarrett Luyk had arguably his best outing of the year in relief for the Panthers. Luyk went three innings giving up no runs, two hits and striking out four while issuing no walks to the Crusaders.
Game vs. UNOH
The Panthers entered their second game on Wednesday needing to win or their season would come to an abrupt end. The response was in the image of what the team has shown for a majority of this season; a game with an outstanding pitching performance and run support for the starting pitcher.
Davenport got things going offensively in the fourth inning on a two run homerun off the bat of
Michael Allen. The Panthers then scored three more runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a 2 RBI single from
Austin Licon. Licon would finish the game 1 for 5, scoring a run and the two RBI.
Brandon Bongard helped the Panthers going 1 for 3 and scored twice, while
Drew Kennedy went 2 for 5 and scored a run.
Jotham Woo had a better game offensively as he went 2 for 5 with a RBI.
Michael Allen was solid in the game as he went 2 for 2, scored a run and had three RBI. Allen also reached base two more times in the game via free passes after being hit by a pitch.
Starter
Drew Sain earned his sixth victory on the year with an outstanding performance versus UNOH pushing his record to 6-2 on the season. Sain would go eight innings allowing one run on six hits and issuing four walks. Sain gave up his first hit in the third inning and would not give up another until the seventh.
Ryan Butzer came in and closed out the Panther victory by giving one run on two hits, striking out one, and issuing no free passes in one inning of work.
