GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Jesse Asanin-Miroux scored the lone goal of the night on a beautiful pass off a free kick from
Stuart Collins to lift Davenport to a 1-0 win over visiting Illinois Tech. The goal came in the opening minute of the second half as the Panthers have now posted three straight wins and four in their last five to improve to 4-3-0 on the season. Davenport will open WHAC play on Saturday when they welcome in Indiana Tech for a 7pm kickoff.
Jesse Asanin-Miroux scored his first goal of the season and ninth of his career while
Kevin O'Brien posted his second straight shutout and improved his school best shutout mark to 13. O'Brien finished the night with seven saves as the Panthers ended up being outshot by the Scarlet Hawks 7-6 on net, but DU led in total shots 19-8.
Early on it looked as if Davenport would take a lead as they created numerous chances in the opening minutes, but IIT keeper Casey Krapfl made some nice saves and a few DU shots were just off the mark to keep the match scoreless heading into the locker room.
After a foul in the opening seconds of the second half gave DU a free kick near midfield, junior
Stuart Collins lofted a ball deep in the Scarlet Hawks box and Asanin-Miroux one-touched it over the keeper's head for the first goal of the game. Jesse would have one more really good chance midway through the second half, but again the IIT keeper was up to the task knocking it aside.
Late in the match, Illinois Tech made some big offensive pushes but the DU defense anchored by O'Brien was up to the challenge making each and every play to preserve the victory. The Panthers have now posted three straight wins, all over teams from the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC), as they enter WHAC play this weekend at 4-3-0 overall.
Post-Match Quotes – Head coach
Chris Hughes
On coming off a 10-day span between games – “A team can either come out un-emotional or take it to the other team and I thought our guys were aggressive right from the start as we created numerous chances. We showed some eagerness and had some wonderful opportunities and I told them at some point, someone will make a mistake and the other team will find the back of the net.”
On goal by senior Jesse Asanin-Miroux – “Every senior on every team in the country wants to go out with a bang and we count on him each and every day and he is so consistent for us. He had a couple of good chances tonight and he found the back of the net”
On team heading into WHAC play – We have won three in a row and we feel we have some momentum going into a team in Indiana Tech we have heard is very solid. Defensively we will need to be solid once again as we were tonight.”
