Davenport Resumes Play With Weekend Series Against Oakland

THE TEAMS:  Davenport (20-4, 10-1 MCHC) vs. Oakland (18-4, 8-3 MCHC)

THE GAMES: Friday, January 11, 2013 • Rochester, Mich • 7:45 p.m. • Saturday, January 12, 2013 • Patterson Ice Center • 7:00 p.m.

PANTHERS VERSUS GOLDEN GRIZZLIES: This weekend Davenport and Oakland will meet for 14th and 15th time. Through the first 13 meetings Davenport holds an 8-5 advantage. Last season the two teams met four times and the home team came away with a win each time. The Grizzlies won 5-3 and 10-1 in Rochester, MI and the Panthers picked up two one goal victories 4-3 (OT) and 5-4 at Patterson Ice Center.

WINTER BREAK RECAP: Although Davenport didn't have any games for the three week winter break, several Panthers were representing the Davenport hockey program elsewhere. Bryon Guerin was selected to play with the D3 Select team and travel to several countries in Europe. In five games with the select team Guerin picked up three goals and five assists. The Panthers were also represented in the MCHC all-star game. Blake Damerow, Garrett Garber, Jordan Steger, and John Cruse played for the MCHC West All-Stars and competed in the skills competition. Jordan Steger won the most accurate shooter competition hitting three out of four targets and was also named MVP of the all-star game.

SCOUTING OAKLAND: The Grizzlies enter the second half of the season looking to pick up right where they left off at the end of the first half. After losing to Adrian-Gold and being swept by UM-Flint, the Grizzlies rattled off 12 straight wins dating all the way back to October 26.

In the first half of the season Oakland had the most explosive offensive at the ACHA division 3 level. The Grizzlies led the league with 170 goals scored in 22 games, good for a 7.72 goals a game average. Of the 170 goals scored by Oakland, 46 or 27% have come on the power play.

The Panthers will look to shutdown #44 Kyle Doan this weekend. The senior forward leads Oakland with 26 goals (8 on the power play) and 11 assists in 22 games. The Grizzlies will rely on the steady goaltending of Anthony Munoz. Munoz enters the weekend with a 7-2 record, 2.12 GAA, and a .92 save percentage.
