ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Davenport track & field teams successfully got the rust off their legs at Grand Valley State's Bob Eubanks Open Friday.
Alex Blehm highlighted the day with a national-qualifying time of 1:21.53 in the men's 600-meter run, placing sixth of ninth in the pack. Blehm was also .15 short from tying the school record held by Samuel Frens.
Stacey Baron and
Kelsee VanderBaan led the effort for the Lady Panthers in the 800-meter run. Baron (2:29.84) and VanderBaan (2:30.17) ran side-by-side for a majority of the race to place eighth and ninth, respectively. Baron and VanderBaan also raced women's mile, with VanderBaan turning in a 5:39.57, Baron clocking in 5:44.84.
In the men's 200-meter dash,
Damacious White and
Mike Carey finished near each other, White turning in a 23.19, Carey finished .34 behind him, for 12
th and 14
th place finishes out of 47, respectively.
Carey also highlighted the 400-meter dash, clocking in 51.19 for a sixth-place finish.
In addition to racing the 60-meter hurdles, Blehm also raced the 600-meter, placing fifth with a time of 1:21.53.
Zach Robinson was also in action Friday. He led the effort in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:04.78, followed by
Justin Jewell at 2:24.88.
Tori Rueckert and
Rebecca Wadsworth represented Davenport in the women's high jump. Both of them reached as high as 1.47 meters.
Emily Rossman and
Katie Homan closed up the women's side of the meet with a 3,000-meter race. Rossman turned in a time of 11:54.03 while the freshman Homan crossed the finish line at 12:43.91. In the men's race,
Dusty Prescott led the way for the Panthers with a time of 9:13.07, followed by
Dustin Brummel (9:23.65),
Brandon George (9:27.90) and Cameron Magro (9:34.76).
The Panthers are back in action Friday as they head to Angola, Ind., for the Trine University Open. The meet is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.

On the teams' performance – “Today was about getting our feet wet, getting back into the swing of things. We've worked really hard this week and into last weekend. Times weren't great, but we are where we need to be right now.”
On if the teams' were showed exhaustion – “It's a combination of coming back from break and working hard all week. Normally, as we get far into the season, the workload will be lightened during the week. But we got to make sure everybody is ready, in shape and can last through the season.”
