D3 Hockey Earns Big Sweep of Oakland

Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- Davenport completed an impressive sweep over Oakland on Saturday night with a 4-1 victory. The Panthers jumped out to an early lead with three goals in the first period and then relied on goaltender John Cruse and the penalty kill as they spent a lot of time shorthanded. Bryon Guerin, Patrick Martin, Jordan Steger, and Jake Hambidge each scored a goal for the Panthers.

The Panthers came out in attack mode in the first period and controlled most of the play. DU recorded 18 shots on goal compared to just 7 for Oakland. Bryon Guerin was the first one to light the lamp 7:55 into the period on assists from Donald Sund and Dugan Kelly. Five minutes later Patrick Martin extend the lead to two goals after receiving a pass from the captain Garrett Garber. Then, with Just under four minutes to play in the opening period Jordan Steger managed to sneak the puck inside the post as the goaltender hugged the post to give DU a 3-0 lead.

The Panthers final goal came 8:37 into the second period on a major power play. Jake Otto and Dugan Kelly cycled the puck up to the blue line to Jake Hambidge who ripped a shot through traffic for his first goal of the season.  

From there on the Panthers offensive attack was halted as they got into trouble with multiple penalties. From the midway point of the second period till the end of the game the Panthers were shorthanded for 9:43, 2:07 which was 5-on-3. Davenport's penalty kill survived the numerous shorthanded situations with minimal damage. The Grizzlies were only able to mustard one power play goal as Lauro scored seven seconds into a minor penalty.
