Next DU event: Saturday, Nov. 2 – vs. Spring Arbor (Match 1)/Saint Francis (Match 2) (DU Student Center) – 10 a.m.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 22 Davenport volleyball team controlled the first two sets but had to rally from a nine-point deficit and hold on to avoid a Halloween spook in the third to sweep Bethel (Ind.) 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-23) Thursday night. The Panthers, winner of three straight, improve to 28-9 on the year heading into a doubleheader with Spring Arbor and St. Francis (Ind.), respectively, Saturday at 10 a.m.
Olivia DenHartigh was the only athlete on the match to reach double figures in the kills department with 14 while Hannah Stone and Nicole Chase each had nine. Sydney Rodriguez led the back with 22 digs followed by Lexie Spetoskey with 18 and in addition to having 14 digs on the night, Amber Getty set up 44 kills.
Davenport quickly jumped into rhythm in the opening set. Getty had three kills during a 9-2 DU run to extend the lead to 18-6. The Panthers had a struggle trying to put the set away as the Pilots had a small five-point rally momentum going, but Rodriguez and Molly Lameyer stopped the small bleed to win set one 25-14.
Both teams went back and forth during the middle set until a 7-3 run lifted the Panthers to a 25-18 win. DenHartigh carried Davenport to the finish line in the set by recording four of the seven kills.
The Panthers put themselves into a hole entering the third set as the Pilots went on an 8-1 run to take a 15-6 lead. DU would turn to the leadership of Chase and Getty to get them back on track and tie the game 16-16. Much like the second set, both teams would trade off with the lead until a Bethel attacking error followed by a kill by Stone added some breathing room for DU, leading 23-20. While an attacking error from each team set up a 24-23 Davenport lead, Chase locked up the match win with a kill.
Post-Match Notes
Despite the loss, Bethel still leads Davenport in the all-time series 4-3…Davenport improves to 2-1 when playing on Halloween night.
