GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport jumped out to a three goal lead in the opening half and then poured it on with two more tallies in the second to claim their third ever Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) tournament title with a 5-1 win over Northwestern Ohio. The Panthers gain an automatic berth into the NAIA National Tournament and their opening round opponent will be announced Monday at 2 p.m. EST.
The top two teams in the WHAC during the regular season met in the tournament final on Friday night but it was all one-sided as the Panthers extended their winning streak to 15 matches with a convincing 5-1 win over the visiting Racers. TJ Ifaturoti got the scoring started with his first of two goals on the day when he lofted a ball over the UNOH keeper's head to put DU up 1-0 at the 23:03 mark. The assist went to Stuart Collins.
Just 3:44 later, WHAC Offensive Player of the Year Dzenan Catic tallied his 24th goal of the season when he booted a ball into the back of the net on a perfect soft touch from Lito Esquivel. The Panthers added one more with just 12 minutes remaining in the opening half when Esquivel scored his first of the game on a sweet header from Chase Burgess off the corner from Jai Maw.
UNOH came out fast in the second half looking to cut into the Panther lead but after a big save from Mirza Harambasic, the transition game from DU led to their fourth goal when Ifaturoti scored his second of the night on a very unselfish pass from Catic to put the Panthers up 4-0. The final tally from Davenport came with 23:49 remaining as senior Jai Maw ended his career on DU Turf Field with another goal as he lofted a ball into the box and it went just over the out-stretch arms of the Racer keeper.
The Racers did get one on the board on a nice shot from Mateo Salguero with 15:25 to play but that would be the only shot allowed in by Harambasic as the senior finished the night with three saves to pick up win number 19 in goal.
Davenport now moves on to the NAIA National Tournament for the second time in school history as they also made it during the 2010 campaign in which this year's senior class were freshman. DU will find out its opponent during a selection show on Monday at 2 p.m. EST.
