GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Senior night always is a special time for any collegiate team but the No. 21 ranked Davenport Volleyball team made it even more special for their lone senior Nicole Chase as they posted a 3-1 victory over No. 20 Cornerstone Wednesday night. The victory broke a two-way tie in the league standings as Davenport will be the second seed in the upcoming WHAC Tournament. The Panthers end their regular season 31-9 overall and 10-1 in conference play.
Davenport started strong and then held off a late Cornerstone rally to pick up a crucial win over their cross-town rivals 25-15, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23. Marcey DeHaan had a stellar night finishing as night's leader in kills with 16 followed by Hannah Stone at 12. Amber Getty continued her outstanding play running the offense as the junior posted 43 assists while chipping in with four kills and six digs. Defensively, DU was led by 21 digs from Sidney Rodriguez while DeHaan had two solo blocks.
Set one was all Davenport from the moment they took a 5-4 lead and increased it to as many as 11 on a block from Hannah Stone and Amber Getty. DeHaan finished the opening set with eight kills as well as her two solo blocks.
Cornerstone, which had not lost a match since late September and was riding a 15-match winning streak, used a strong finish to the second set after it was tied 21-21 to score four of the final five points to even the match at 1-1. DU's offense, which was so great in the opener, tallied just nine kills in the second.
In the all-important third set, Davenport took a 6-6 tie and used a 10-4 run to open up a six point lead that was finished off by a kill from Nicole Chase. The lead was dwindled down to three but never any closer as the Panthers won 25-21.
Looking to close out the match in four, Davenport played close to the Golden Eagles in the fourth set with neither team holding a lead of more than three. Trailing 16-13, DU posted a 6-0 spurt that put them up two and it was a lead they would never relinquish finishing off the Golden Eagles 25-23.
The win gives Davenport the No. 2 seed in the upcoming WHAC Tournament where they will meet the winner of the 7/10 match that is slated for Wednesday night. DU will be in action in the quarterfinal round next Friday at 4:45 p.m. at Madonna University.
