GRANDRAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport and Aquinas battled during period one for control and for the lead but a score of 0-0 stayed on the board. Aquinas took the lead early 1-0 in the second and it would stay until the third period came to a close. Neither team could generate anything for the majority of the game, but DU kept the pressure on throughout the game but it wasn't enough. These two teams meet again tomorrow at Griff's Ice House at 8:00 p.m. to finish the weekend series and to finish the 2013 part of the season.
The Panthers and Saints spent the majority of the first period skating up and down the ice trying to create chances. Both showed signs of impressive play during the first period resulting in no goals for either team and left a lot of room for one team to take control during period two. The shots were nearly equal among the two teams but neither had a significant amount of shots do to excellent defensive play.
The Saints came out of the locker room for period two prepared and were able to get a quick goal on
Andrew Habasevich putting them in the lead with 18 minutes remaining in the second period of play. The middle of period two belonged to the sticks of the DU offensive, who just kept pouring shots onto Sean Schmeiser who was in net for the Saints, but Schmeiser was unstoppable in-between the posts. The Panther defense held the Saints for the remainder of the period but offensively DU struggled to get anything started.
That single Aquinas goal remained the only thing on the scoreboard as the Panthers attempted to increase their aggressive play and find an opening to strike. A mix of a few unfortunate bounces and some big plays by Schmeiser resulted in the puck not being able to find the back of the net and time was running out. Aquinas would win this surprisingly slow paced game with the single goal scored during the second.
Tomorrow the Panthers get one more chance to leave their mark on Aquinas with a game at Griff's Ice House starting at 8:00 p.m.
