GRANDRAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport and Aquinas held a close game in the first, both putting one in the net. The Saints scored two straight goals in the second that the Panthers weren't able to respond to which put them in a predicament in the third. DU brought it together for a third period to remember and a strong finish in overtime to complete the 2013 part of their season. They return on January 10
th against Michigan- Flint with some familiar faces coming back to ice.
The Panthers showed some immediate improvements from last night in period one were able to get the upper hand late in the first period with a
Jake Otto goal assisted by
Willis Gelow 13 minutes and 54 seconds into the first. However, Aquinas responded less than a minute later with a goal that would take the 1-1 tie into the second.
Aquinas would go on to take control in the second scoring two straight goals with no DU response. The first goal came just under five minutes into the period and gave the Saints the lead. While on a power-play, Aquinas would ass one more to their lead five minutes later which put a 3-1 score on the board. Davenport prevented the Saints from adding anything more goals onto their lead but the Panthers couldn't seem to get one past Sean Schmeiser, who was in net. The Panthers would head into the third trailing and in need of someone to take control.
The entire team came together during period three ready to take their game to the next level. First Brandon Madai would start them off with a sweet goal seven minutes in to make it a one goal game.
Jake Otto put another one on the board for the tie just over the half way mark that tied the game up. The Panthers held Aquinas for the remainder of regulation and held puck possession nearly the rest of the period.
Over time was a nail biter but the Panthers remained confident and in control.
Daniel Swink took a game he already was playing awesome in and made it a whole lot better by ending all the nerves with a picture-perfect goal with just over a minute remaining in the over-time period.
