GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After having a bit of struggles finding a momentum until the final game of the season series opener last weekend, the Davenport baseball team will try to put the past behind and look ahead to a big challenge this week, a two-day four-game set with No. 20 Georgetown College (Ky.). Due to a storm scheduled to arrive in Georgetown this weekend, the two ballclubs' coaches agreed to move their series back a day to Thursday and Friday with 2 p.m. first pitches.
The Panthers got off to a slow start in their season-opening weekend at Union College (Ky.) last week. After losing the first two games on four hits, the Panther bats would explode as they used 20 hits to produce 14 runs and win the series finale. As his offense is starting see their bats warm up, head coach
Kevin Tidey will look to see if his pitching staff can get into a rhythm. Although Tidey said they barely missed the strike zone, the pitchers conceded 35 walks in the series, including a program-record 17 in game one.
After playing eight games on the road, the Tigers will be opening their home schedule against Davenport. The Tigers went 2-2 in the Tennessee Valley Invitational, defeating No. 24 Madonna (8-3) and Bluefield College (6-3), while falling to No. 3 Lee University (1-6) and Bryan College (2-9). Mike Steinke, EJ Murray and Ryan Serrato have started all eight games for the Tigers, and despite going 0-2 in his starts, pitcher Matt Smith holds the best ERA on the team (1.74 in 10.1 IP).
