GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Jotham Woo and
Cam Cooper both produced four hits and combined for four RBI as the two outfielders guided the Davenport baseball team to two victories over No. 20 Georgetown College Thursday afternoon.
Michael Clutterbuck went the distance in game one, throwing a one-hit shutout performance win the pitcher's duel 1-0, while a two-run ninth inning set up a 6-5 victory over the Tigers in game two.
Game One
Clutterbuck (1-1) was unstoppable in the opening game, going all seven innings and surrendering the one hit and a walk while striking out three.
The Panthers (3-2) produced seven hits but didn't bring a run in until the seventh inning. Edward Grochowalski, Jr. hit a one-out single, advanced to second on
Tyler Berger's single up the middle, stole third and scored the only run on Cooper's RBI single up the middle.
Game Two
The nightcap of the doubleheader was a bit different than the first game.
Drew Sain made his season debut and although he allowed two runs in the first inning, he settled down and reached the fourth inning allowing six hits and a walk while punching out two batters.
Although Georgetown's (4-6) starter Matt Smith held the Panthers scoreless in the early part of the contest, the Panthers would break through in the fourth inning. Woo singled to first and
Michael Allen reached base after being hit before back-to-back RBI singles by Grochowalski and Berger tied the game 2-2 and Cooper's two-out two-run double gave the Panthers a 4-2 lead.
The Tigers would answer back in the seventh inning with a leadoff walk followed by a single set up a RBI double and a sacrifice fly to even the score 4-4.
Davenport got its lead back in the ninth inning when
Cam Bortell drew a pinch-hit walk and scored on
Carlos Berroa's double to center field. The Panthers would chip in an insurance run when Woo delivered an RBI single to left field.
The insurance run proved to be worthy as the Tigers would score in their half of the ninth and looked to tie the game with a runner on third and nobody out, but Robert Walter (1-0) would hold on to secure the Panthers third win of the season.
The four-game series concludes Saturday at 2 p.m.
Post-Game Quotes – Head coach
Kevin Tidey
On if his pitchers found a groove – “It was definitely found in game one. Clutterbuck was amazing. He gave up one borderline hit. He pitched great.
Drew Sain also threw really well in his first game back. He and the staff had a bit of a meltdown but we played much better and much competitive.”
