BATESVILLE, Ark. – A late rally by Ashford in the opener and some costly errors in the second against Lyon sent the softball team to a pair of defeats on the second day of the Lyon College Tournament in Batesville, Ark. Davenport will head back to Michigan with a 1-2-1 overall record as they dropped the opener to Ashford 4-3 before falling to the host Scots 10-7. DU will be in action next when they take on Alma College on Sunday, February 24 to begin their annual spring break trip to the NTC Training Center in Clermont, Fla.
After going 1-0-1 on the opening day of the 2013 campaign, the Davenport softball team fell victim to a seventh inning rally and then made some costly errors to drop both games to conclude the Lyon College Tournament over the weekend.
Game 1 – Ashford (Iowa) 4, Davenport 3
The first five innings featured a pitchers dual between DU starter
Sam Cole and AU starter Megan Freiling as the pair allowed only two runs on just three hits. Davenport struck first in the top of the second inning when
Paige Sant'Angelo scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Carli San Millan. The Saints got the equalizer in their half of the third after an error brought home Heidi Riley who reached on a 1-out triple.
The Panthers got the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and went up 3-1 when sophomore
Ashleigh Blovsky belted her second homer of the season scoring Sant'Angelo. Taking a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh, Davenport was unable to hold onto to the lead as Ashford scored three times to take home the 4-3 win.
Sam Cole suffered her first loss of the season as the senior struck out seven while giving up the same number of hits.
Game 2 – Lyon (Ark.) 10, Davenport 7
Davenport held a 4-2 lead after the second as
Ashleigh Blovsky got the scoring started with a 2-RBI double in the first and then
KC Dunne and Sant-Angelo each picked up an RBI in the second.
Kyleigh Linebaugh made her first collegiate start on the mound despite battling a nagging knee injury and the freshman was forced out of the game after the third inning as she gave up seven runs (5 earned) as DU trailed 7-4.
Sophomore
Allison Werner came in relief of Linebaugh and allowed three more Lyon runs with one in the fifth and two in the sixth as DU fell behind 10-4. A seventh inning rally looked as if it would happen for the second straight game but DU could only post three as
Carli SanMillan picked up a 2-out 2-RBI double while Sant'Angelo also got an RBI but it was not enough as DU fell 10-7.
Davenport will be in action next at the NTC Training Center in Clermont, Fla. where they will play 11 games in seven days beginning with Alma College on Sunday, February 24 at 9am. Every game will be broadcast live on the Davenport Athletics Network and live stats will also be available.
