DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Michael Allen's only two hits in the game came in the fourth inning as he ignited a hitting barrage in the frame that produced all the runs the Davenport baseball needed to hold off No. 7 Embry-Riddle Tuesday evening.

Derek Dennis, Jotham Woo, Edward Grochowalski Jr. and Ryan Manning also produced a two-hit evening for the Panthers (4-5). Michael Clutterbuck (2-1) continued to stay solid on the mound as he surrendered two runs on six hits and three walks. He also punched out two batters.

After surrendering the walk-off bases loaded single Monday at Warner, Ryan Butzer bounced back from the loss and pitched a 2.2 shutout outing for his first save in the game.

Clutterbuck got himself into a jam in the second inning when a one-out single and two balks set up a RBI double for the first run of the game. The right-hander settled down and retired the third inning before he got a lot of help from his offense.

Allen hit a grounder to third base but was able to beat the throw to start the fourth inning. After a popup, Grochowalski followed with a single up the middle to move Allen's courtesy runner, Andrew Kawam, into scoring position. The Panthers would do some damage when Tyler Berger and Eric Cummings hit back-to-back RBI singles to take a 3-1 lead. Cam Cooper would follow with a grounder to first but the throw to force Cummings out at second sailed by the middle infielders, allowing all runners to advance including Berger scoring home.

Although Dennis flew out, Woo followed with a single to load the bases and Allen cleared the bases with a double to the right field fence to complete the 7-1 lead.

Both teams' bats would remain quiet until the home half of the seventh, when the Eagles used three hits, including a two-run double, on Garrett Lovik to cut Davenport's lead to one run.

Butzer would come in to successfully stop the damage and would prevent the Eagles from soaring over the scoreboard for the win.

The Panthers Florida trip continues as they will head to Lakeland to play a doubleheader with Southeastern. First pitch is at 4 p.m.

Post-Game Quotes – Head coach Kevin Tidey

On the fourth inning – “It had some enthusiasm. It got us going a bit. But I was a little disappointed because we didn't carry that enthusiasm over the other innings, but we definitely it was good to see key at-bats and situations and guys coming through.”

On Ryan Butzer – “I was excited for Ryan because he has been so good for us last year, and he's been good for us this year. He was pretty disappointed in yesterday's results and I'm glad to see him come back and get the save tonight.”
