LAKELAND, Fla. – The Davenport baseball team scored first in both games but the final results were different as it went on to sweep a doubleheader at Southeastern Wednesday night. The Panthers bats dominated game one 9-3 but the pitchers took control of game two as they held on to a 3-2 win.
Game One
Danny Sullivan (1-1) continues to pitch solid as the junior threw five solid innings of work, allowing one run on three hits while not surrendering any free passes and striking out two.
The Panthers got on the board in the second inning.
Carlos Berroa and Edward Grochowalski Jr. led off the inning with back-to-back singles and
Tyler Berger brought the first two run of the game in with a single to right field while advanced to second on the throw. Berger would score the Panthers third run on back-to-back wild pitches.
Davenport would add on to the lead one inning later.
Jotham Woo led off with a walk and stole second before he scored on
Michael Allen's single through the right side. After Allen's courtesy runner,
Andrew Kawam, stole second to setup Grochowalski's RBI double down the left field line to take a 5-0 lead.
Derek Dennis opened up the fifth inning reaching on a fielding error but would score on a catcher interference followed by another fielding error during Grochowalski's at-bat.
The Panthers put the game out of the Fire's reach when
Ryan Manning's two-run triple to the corner of right field and a two-out RBI single by Berroa.
Game Two
The Panthers picked up where they left off in the first game.
Derek Dennis hit a one-out single to right and with two outs, Allen sent a pitch to the deepest part of the yard in right center where the ball bounced off the top of the fence for a two-run homer.
The deciding run came in the second inning. Grochowalski led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch before back-to-back ground outs brought him home.
Jordan Anderson got the first win of the season but had a bit of struggles during his outing. He went 3.2 innings and scattered a pair of hits but the senior lefty surrendered six walks and two runs.
Bobby Walter and
Jordan Anderson both threw a shutout inning and
Colton Satterlee conceded only one hit but he shut the door for his first save of the season.
The Panthers will continue to play under the lights in Florida as they will head to Babson Park to play a single game at Webber International Thursday at 7 p.m.
