Panthers Advance to Semi-Final of MCHC Tournament, Face No. 2 Hope College

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -  After wins over Lansing Community College and Aquinas College last weekend, the Panthers have advanced to the semi-finals of the MCHC Tournament. Davenport will face-off against Hope College for a third time this season for a chance to play the winner of Adrian-Gold vs. Oakland in the Championship game.

The Panthers drew Lansing CC in the first round of the MCHC Tournament and advanced to the second round with a 4-2 win. Ben Duthler put the Panthers up 1-0 halfway through the first period on a play assited by Bryon Guerin and Daniel Swink. The Stars scored before the end of the first to make it 1-1 heading into the second period.

In the second, Branden Burton put DU up 2-1 with a power play goal. Jordan Steger and Donald Sund were credited with the assists. Once again, Lansing came responded with a goal to tie the game. This time the stars picked up a shorthanded goal in the third period to pull even. With three minutes left Zach Feher was able to save the Panthers from an upset as he picked up the eventual game winner. Blake Damerow added an empty netter in the final seconds to wrap up the scoring.

In the quarterfinals matchup the Panthers got off to a quick start with four goals in the first as they cruised by Aquinas 8-1. Dugan Kelly, Jordan Steger, Donald Sund, and Jake Otto picked up the goals for DU in the opening period, with Kelly's and Steger's goals coming 20 seconds apart. In the second, Aquinas got on the scoreboard before Sund picked up his second goal of the game to make it 5-1 heading into the final stanza.

Davenport finished off the game with three goals in the third period. Damerow picked up a goal four minutes into the period followed by a goal form Otto a minute later. Danny Beacham picked up the final goal, scoring his first goal as a Panther.

The win over the Saints propelled the Panthers into the semi-finals for a showdown against Hope College. The Panthers and Dutchmen will meet at Edge Ice Arena in Holland on Friday night at 5:30 for a third time this season. DU swept Hope for the first time in program history during the regular season to help secure the regular season MCHC championship and the No. 1 seed in the North Region. The Panthers beat Hope 4-2 at home and then 4-3 the next night at Edge Ice Arena. The Other semi-final features Adrian-Gold and Oakland University. Davenport, Hope, and Adrian will all be traveling to Springfield, MO to compete in the ACHA D3 National Tournament on March 12.
